John Durham: Reflecting on a Distinguished Career and Investigative Challenges

Interviewer: Good day, Mr. Durham. Thank you for taking the time to speak with us today. As a renowned prosecutor and former U.S. Attorney, your work has garnered significant attention. Could you start by sharing some insights into your experience and background?

John Durham: Thank you for having me. I began my career in the legal field as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Connecticut back in 1982. Over the years, I’ve worked on a wide range of cases, including public corruption, organized crime, and narcotics. My commitment to upholding justice and the rule of law led me to serve as the U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut from 2005 to 2017. During that time, I had the privilege of working with dedicated professionals and tackling complex cases that had a significant impact on our communities.

Interviewer: Your most recent work as a Special Counsel investigating the origins of the Russia investigation has generated substantial interest. Could you provide an overview of the scope and objectives of your investigation?

John Durham: Certainly. In May 2019, Attorney General William Barr appointed me as a Special Counsel to conduct a review of the events surrounding the 2016 presidential election. My primary focus was to examine the origins of the FBI’s Russia investigation and to assess whether any misconduct or abuse of power occurred. This investigation involved conducting interviews, reviewing documents, and gathering evidence from various sources, both within and outside the government.

The goal was to ensure a thorough and independent examination of the facts, following the evidence wherever it led. It was essential to provide a comprehensive understanding of the events and determine if any wrongdoing or improprieties took place.

Interviewer: The investigation lasted for several years and faced its fair share of challenges. Could you shed some light on the complexities and hurdles you encountered throughout this process?

John Durham: Indeed, any investigation of this nature comes with its complexities and challenges. We faced numerous hurdles, such as obtaining relevant documents and securing interviews with key witnesses. Additionally, due to the classified nature of some information, we had to navigate the process of declassifying certain materials while ensuring national security interests were protected.

Moreover, the investigation covered a significant time span and involved a multitude of individuals and agencies. Coordinating efforts, gathering evidence, and establishing a clear timeline required meticulous attention to detail.

Interviewer: The investigation concluded in 2020, and the report has been eagerly awaited by many. Could you share any insights into the findings and conclusions of your investigation?

John Durham: As a matter of policy, I cannot comment on ongoing or completed investigations. It is essential to maintain the integrity of the process and respect the confidentiality of the subjects involved. I can assure you that the investigation was conducted thoroughly and impartially, guided by the facts and the law.

Interviewer: Understandably, the confidentiality of the investigation is paramount. Looking ahead, what impact do you hope your work will have on the public’s trust in the justice system and the overall political landscape?

John Durham: The public’s trust in the justice system is crucial for a functioning democracy. It is my hope that our investigation will contribute to a better understanding of the events in question and shed light on any potential misconduct or abuse of power. By conducting a fair and thorough review, we aim to provide the public with confidence that their institutions are committed to upholding the rule of law.

It is essential to remember that the justice system operates independently, guided by facts and evidence. The outcomes of investigations should be evaluated on their merits, rather than through a political lens. Ultimately, the public’s trust in the system relies on a commitment to transparency, accountability, and the pursuit of justice.

Interviewer: Thank you, Mr. Durham, for sharing your insights and perspectives on your remarkable career and the investigation.
