WHO Declares Mpox Global Health Emergency

In a concerning development, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared mpox a global health emergency.

This marks the second time in two years that the organization has issued its highest alert for the viral infection. The decision follows a surge in mpox cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) with the virus rapidly spreading to neighboring countries.

The current outbreak is particularly alarming due to its severity. Unlike the previous outbreak, which primarily affected gay and bisexual men, this time, women and children are among the most vulnerable populations. The new variant of mpox circulating in the region is also more lethal, with a mortality rate estimated to be between 3-4%, significantly higher than the previous outbreak’s fatality rate of less than 1%.

The WHO’s declaration of a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) signifies the seriousness of the situation and triggers a coordinated global response. It allows for expedited research, increased funding, and intensified public health measures to contain the disease. The international community is called upon to collaborate to prevent transmission, treat infected individuals, and save lives.

The African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has also declared mpox a public health emergency, underscoring the situation’s urgency on the continent. With over 14,000 cases and 524 deaths reported in the DRC alone, the outbreak poses a significant threat to public health. The rapid spread of the new mpox clade has raised concerns about its potential to spread beyond Africa.

Experts warn that the world needs to prepare to handle this new wave of mpox. A significant challenge is Africa’s lack of sufficient vaccines and antiviral treatments. The WHO’s declaration is a call to action for governments, health organizations, and the global community to work together to develop effective strategies to combat the disease and protect vulnerable populations. As the situation evolves, monitoring the outbreak closely and implementing robust public health measures to prevent further spread and mitigate its impact is crucial.
