VinFast VF6: The Compact Electric SUV Redefining Affordable Mobility in India

The market for electric vehicles (EVs) in India is getting hotter, and Vietnamese carmaker VinFast is making a big move by releasing its small electric SUV, the VinFast VF6, on September 6, 2025. The VF6, which costs ₹16.49 lakh (ex-showroom), wants to shake up the competitive midsize EV crossover segment by going up against the Hyundai Creta Electric, Tata Curvv EV, and Mahindra BE 6. The VF6 has a sleek design, cutting-edge technology, and a price that is hard to beat, especially with all the great incentives that come with it. It will appeal to both city commuters and people who are buying their first electric vehicle. Here’s a closer look at what makes the VinFast VF6 a great choice in India’s growing EV market.

Design: Sleek, Modern, and Unique VinFast

The VinFast VF6 has a coupe-like shape that is both modern and useful. The VF6 is the perfect size for getting around in cities. It is 4,238 mm long, 1,824 mm wide, and 1,594 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,700 mm. It is also big enough to stand out on Indian roads. Its 190 mm ground clearance, which is perfect for India’s many types of roads, makes it easy to drive over potholes and speed bumps in cities.

The VF6’s outside is defined by VinFast’s signature “V Face” design, which includes a full-width LED daytime running light (DRL) strip that makes the car look futuristic and easy to spot. The radar module for its advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) is housed in split LED headlights and a low-set honeycomb grille. Sculpted body panels, plastic cladding around the wheel arches, and stylish 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels all make the side profile look better. The VF6’s sleek look is enhanced by connected LED taillights and a high-set lightbar at the back. The 423-liter boot is useful for storing things, but the loading area is a little narrow.

Minimalist, tech-focused, and comfortable inside

When you get into the VF6, you’ll find a simple, tech-focused cabin that puts a premium on ease of use and connectivity. The main feature is a 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system that stands on its own. It controls most of the car’s functions, such as navigation, climate control, and settings. The VF6 doesn’t have a traditional digital instrument cluster; instead, it uses a head-up display to show important driving information. This design choice makes the car feel more futuristic, but drivers who like to feel their controls may need some time to get used to it.

There are two themes for the cabin: an all-black option or a classy mocha brown and black dual-tone option, both covered in high-quality vegan leather. The front seats are ventilated, there is dual-zone climate control with PM 1.0 air filtration, and a panoramic glass roof (only available on higher trims). The VF6 also has wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an 8-speaker sound system, and a phone charger that doesn’t need a wire. But the back legroom is described as “adequate” rather than “spacious,” which makes it better for shorter trips or families with kids.

Performance and range: useful and effective

The VF6 comes in three trims: Earth, Wind, and Wind Infinity. All three are powered by a 59.6 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack from CATL, a top global EV battery maker. The Earth trim has 174 hp and 250 Nm of torque, while the Wind and Wind Infinity trims have 204 hp and 310 Nm. All models have front-wheel drive, which strikes a good balance between performance and efficiency for driving in the city and on the highway.

Range is one of the car’s best features. VinFast says it can go 381–399 km on a single charge, depending on the trim. Some sources say it can go as far as 468 km in perfect conditions. The Eco trim goes from 0 to 100 km/h in about 9 seconds, and the higher trims go from 0 to 100 km/h in about 7.5 to 8.5 seconds. This makes the VF6 fast enough for city driving. With a 100 kW DC charger, the battery can go from 20% to 80% in about 30 minutes. With a 7.4 kW AC charger, it takes about 9.5 hours to fully charge.

Safety and Technology: Full of Features

VinFast has given the VF6 a lot of safety and driver assistance features, making it stand out in its class. Adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and a driver monitoring system are all part of Standard Level 2 ADAS. The SUV also has parking sensors, a 360-degree camera, and a lot of airbags. The VF6 stays up-to-date with the latest software improvements thanks to features like over-the-air updates and a connected car app.

Pricing and incentives: a big deal

The Earth trim of the VF6 starts at ₹16.49 lakh (ex-showroom), which makes it one of the cheapest EVs in its class. The Wind and Wind Infinity trims are likely to cost a little more, around ₹18–20 lakh. VinFast is making the deal even better by giving away free charging until July 2028 and free maintenance for three years. The VF6 also comes with a 7-year or 2 lakh km warranty, which gives buyers peace of mind. These incentives, along with the fact that the VF6 will be made in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, make it a good choice in a crowded market.

Positioning in the market and competition

The VF6 is entering a crowded midsize EV crossover market in India, where it will have to compete with the Hyundai Creta Electric, Tata Curvv EV, Mahindra BE 6, and MG Windsor EV. It has a lot going for it, like low prices, a lot of features in the cabin, and a long warranty. However, it has to deal with problems like controls that aren’t easy to use and rear seating that isn’t very spacious. VinFast’s plan to open 32 dealerships in 27 cities and sell directly to consumers shows that they are serious about getting a foothold in India.

The verdict: A new competitor with guts

The VinFast VF6 is a great addition to India’s electric vehicle market because it has a modern design, cutting-edge technology, and a price that is competitive. Its small size, good range, and feature-rich cabin make it a great choice for city dwellers who want a stylish electric SUV that doesn’t break the bank. It might not have the most space inside or the best driving dynamics, but its value proposition—free charging, maintenance, and a long warranty—sets it apart. VinFast’s VF6 could find a big niche in the quickly growing EV market as the company starts its journey in India.
