Jaclyn Hill: The Rise of a Beauty Influencer and Entrepreneur

Jaclyn Roxanne Torrey (née Eilers) was born on July 20, 1990, in Mineral, Illinois. She is an American businesswoman and internet personality who has had a lasting impact on the beauty industry. Hill has turned her love of makeup into a global brand, with millions of followers and a wide range of businesses. She is known for her interesting YouTube tutorials and her work as an entrepreneur. Even though she has had problems and controversies, her strength and dedication have made her one of the first beauty influencers.

Jaclyn Hill grew up on a family farm in Mineral, Illinois. Her family had owned the land for four generations. In 1998, when she was eight years old, her family moved to Tampa, Florida. Her father James, mother Robin, older brother Nicholas, and older sister Rachel all moved there because her father wanted to do missionary work and evangelism. The family went to places like India and Honduras to preach Christianity, and Hill was homeschooled when she was a child. She later went to college in Sarasota, Florida, where she studied photography, but she dropped out after her first year to follow her love of makeup. In the beginning of her career, Hill worked as a freelance makeup artist and at a MAC Cosmetics store, where she learned more about beauty and fell in love with it.

In 2011, Hill started her YouTube channel, Jaclynhill1. At the time, she was living off food stamps and working as a self-taught makeup artist. Her clients pushed her to make makeup tutorials, and her first video, a holiday makeup look inspired by Kim Kardashian, quickly became popular. Viewers loved her bubbly personality, makeup tips that changed their lives, and content that they could relate to, which helped her grow quickly. A collaboration video with Kim Kardashian got more than 10 million views by 2017, making her a beauty influencer. As of 2024, her channel has more than 5.6 million subscribers and hundreds of millions of views. One of her most popular videos, “Smokey Cat Eye Tutorial,” has more than 16 million views.

Hill’s content changed over time to include makeup reviews, skincare routines, vlogs, and beauty giveaways. This attracted a loyal audience, mostly young women. Her honesty and knowledge drew in big brands, which led to high-profile partnerships and her first meet-and-greet at Sephora in New York City in 2015, where fans came from all over to see her.

Hill’s journey as an entrepreneur started when she worked with big beauty brands. She worked with BECCA Cosmetics in 2015 to make the “Champagne Pop” highlighter, which sold more than 25,000 units in 20 minutes at Sephora, breaking sales records. Her later partnerships with Morphe Cosmetics, such as a 2015 eyeshadow palette, a 2016 brush set with gems, and a 2017 “Jaclyn Hill x Morphe” palette, all sold out quickly. They are said to have made $10.7 million and $12.2 million in earned media value (EMV) for BECCA and Morphe, respectively. She came out with the Morphe Vault Collection in 2018. It had four 10-pan palettes.

Hill started her own brand, Jaclyn Cosmetics, in May 2019. The first products were 20 nude “So Rich Lipstick” shades. Even though it sold out on the first day, the release was marred by problems like gritty textures, air bubbles, and hairs in the products, according to customers. Some people even said they had allergic reactions, which led to a call for a recall. In a YouTube video from June 2019 called “My Lipsticks,” Hill talked about the problems, apologized, and offered refunds. However, her explanations were not well received, which caused a lot of backlash. She deleted her Instagram and Twitter accounts for a while and only used YouTube.

Hill didn’t give up, though. In 2021, she relaunched Jaclyn Cosmetics with a Valentine’s Day mystery collection, then a Bronze and Blush duo, and finally Beaming Light loose highlighters. She worked with her mother, Robin, on the Luxe Legacy Collection in April 2022. Forma Brands, the parent company of Morphe, filed for bankruptcy in January 2023, owing Hill $2 million in unsecured claims. This made things hard for Jaclyn Cosmetics. Hill said in January 2024 that Jaclyn Cosmetics would close. She called it a “cherished chapter” that she was ready to end.

Hill went beyond makeup and started selling clothes and accessories. She started the jewelry line Jaclyn Roxanne in November 2021. It was inspired by her grandmother’s pearls and her own collection. The brand, which was built from the ground up and paid for itself, sold out its first collection in just 48 hours. She also started Koze, a brand of loungewear that focuses on comfort, and ImInIt.com, a marketplace run by influencers. In August 2023, though, both Jaclyn Roxanne and Koze closed.

Hill’s private life has been as public as her work. In August 2009, she married drummer Jon Hill, but they split up in May 2018 after almost nine years. Hill said, “We were good friends, not life partners.” She started dating Jordan Torrey (also known as Jordan Farnum), a social media star and friend of her ex-husband, in 2018. This led to rumors of cheating, which she denied in a video in 2020. In December 2021, the couple got engaged. They got married on April 29, 2023, and then moved to California in April 2024.

Hill has been honest about her mental health problems, which include anxiety and depression that got worse because of the 2019 lipstick scandal and being in the public eye. She said that drinking alcohol helped her deal with her problems, which made her gain weight and get more criticism online. She took a break from social media in 2020 to focus on her health, putting therapy and self-care first. Hill has shown strength despite ongoing trolling. In a 2022 interview with Business Insider, she said, “I don’t care anymore.” Now that my products are great, I’m moving on.

Jaclyn Hill’s rise from a small-town makeup artist to a beauty mogul shows how entrepreneurial she is and how well she connects with her fans. As of 2024, her net worth is thought to be between $2 million and $20 million. She has inspired millions through her tutorials and by being open about her personal and professional problems.
