Google Expands AI Features in Search: What You Need to Know

Google is significantly expanding the role of artificial intelligence in its core Search product, introducing new capabilities and wider availability that aim to reshape how people find information online. More Intelligent, More Helpful AI Search

At the heart of Google’s latest updates is AI Mode — an advanced generative AI feature that goes beyond traditional search results to provide conversational, context-rich answers. AI Mode uses Google’s Gemini models to understand complex queries and deliver synthesized responses that include summaries, tables, visual elements, and interactive follow-up options. Initially launched as an experimental feature, AI Mode has now been expanded with agentic capabilities, enabling personalized assistance and task-oriented actions.

Preferred Sources & Publisher Partnerships: To balance AI-generated insights with reliable content from the open web, Google has expanded its Preferred Sources feature to show results from trusted publications and news subscriptions directly within search. The company is also piloting AI partnerships with major publishers to highlight authoritative reporting alongside AI summaries.

This effort aims to ensure that AI-powered search surfaces credible information and maintains transparency by connecting users back to original content sources.

Enhanced Search Features Across Google

Beyond AI Mode, Google is integrating AI into other parts of the search ecosystem:

  • AI Overviews provide quick, AI-generated summaries at the top of search results, distilling complex topics into concise insights with links to explore further. These are rolling out to more users and languages globally.
  • Discover and Sports Updates are gaining AI-driven previews and feeds to help users catch up on trending topics or live sports developments.
  • Visual and voice interactions — such as “Search Live” using voice and camera input — are enhancing real-time, context-aware searching.
